OpenMultitouch Externals

OpenMultitouch 1.2 Externals turns your laptop trackpad into an expressive MPE controller inside Max/MSP and Max for Live.

Play multitouch gestures as per-note pitch bend, pressure, and timbre, or access raw touch data to build your own patches. On supported Apple Silicon MacBooks, optional objects also provide lid angle, gyroscope, and accelerometer control.

macOS and Windows builds are available. Motion sensor objects are macOS only.

Main objects

A playable instrument for Max. It includes a piano keyboard or drum-pad grid, live touch circles, pressure response, and MPE MIDI output for MPE synths and Max for Live devices.

The same engine without the built-in UI. Ideal for users who want to design their own interface or only need raw touch and MPE data streams. Supports up to 10 fingers on macOS and 5 fingers on Windows.

Pressure control

On macOS, pressure response has been improved in version 1.2. The system can now respond to the amount of fingertip area in contact with the trackpad, making pressure control feel more natural, stable, and playable. A new Pressure Sensitivity slider allows you to adjust how responsive the pressure feels.

On Mac trackpads with force sensing, pressure can also reflect real force/weight data where supported. On Windows, expression is generated from finger motion on the Precision Touchpad, optimised for musical control.

Reads the screen hinge angle as a simple gauge and integer outlet, allowing performance gestures based on opening or closing the laptop lid.

gyroscope
Provides a live gyroscope view and degrees-per-second data for tilts and continuous modulation.

accelerometer
Provides an accelerometer scope, tilt data, and tap intensity outlets for physical performance control.
